We’ve come a long way since the days of 8-bit gaming. With developers like Bethesda and BioWare releasing some of the most visually impressive games to date, studios are always trying to best one another with better looking games.
One group of developers have never failed to disappoint gamers with their breath-taking scenery and finely detailed characters. This one group is ofcourse Cliffy B and the team at Epic Games.
Epic Games have a team of extraordinary artists designing characters, environments, weapons and everything else you see whilst you play the GoW games. The team use a 3D modelling program known as ZBrush to bring their imaginations to life.
In October, the ZBrush website “ZBrush Central” experienced a lot of activity in its forums. The high volume of activity came from some of the Epic art team who were members of the forums and were using the forums as a way to showcase some of their work.
It started when Mike Kime and Chris Wells, two Senior Character Artists for Epic Games created the “Character Art Dump” thread, showcasing many of the Gears of War characters as works in progress. The fans went wild once they had caught wind of their newly free “behind the scenes” look at how some of the characters had come to be.
Following this, Senior Environment Artist Kevin Johnstone (also a member of the team) started the “Environmental Art Dump” thread. Kevin also spent his time on the forums answering questions from his peers and admirers about his work and what went into creating such impressive pieces.
Here’s a handful of our favourites from the forums.
There’s just a few here but the ZBrush forums are riddled with them.
