One of June’s Games with Gold, SpeedRunners, pits 4 players in an epic race through intricate mazes. Brought to you by tinyBuild, you swing, run, and jump trying to make your opponents fall off the screen. An interesting, fun, chaotic racing game with a quirky story, makes this game stand above the lot.
The premise is simple; go faster than everyone else. At your disposal are your skills, Mario Kart-esque pickup weapons, and a grappling hook. The combination provides a fast paced and hectic game where the end goal is to win 3 rounds. With 3 distinct game modes to choose from, there is plenty to do. One of the best thing about the game is the end of each round. After the first player is eliminated (or two minutes has passed), the screen begins to shrink and shake. It makes each level harder as the time goes on and helps progress the rounds towards an end.
The story is short in nature but provides some quirky one liners. The entire thing is set like a comic book where you, SpeedRunner are running through the competition. Each set of levels provides a new combination of characters and levels. Completing the sets rewards you with readable comic books that provide more information and backstory. With 4 different difficulties and 4 sets, it might seem short but provides a decent amount of gameplay.
The other 2 game modes are online and local multiplayer. These both play like the story mode only without the jokes. Unless of course you are playing with some good friends who provide the entertainment. The only difference with the multiplayer is that local only has the characters and levels you start with and those you’ve unlocked through level progression.
The level progression in SpeedRunners is quite satisfying. Instead of each level providing one unlock, every 25% of the level gives something new. Between, weapons, characters, and new levels, there are many things to work towards. If you can appreciate the crude and corny jokes, you will enjoy every detail of the game. With silly names and a good story, plenty of laughs await.
In the end, SpeedRunners plays best with a good group of friends but is fun alone too. While the story isn’t bad, I wish there was more of it! Overall, this little game is packed full of action, laughs, and thrills.
